<nettime-ann> EVENT: 'UNSPEAK - Words Are Weapons', a new iDoc, AMS 20 June

20 June 2013
, at Eye Amsterdam, 7.30 pm
An evening about the upcoming iDoc 'UNSPEAK - Words Are Weapons'
Special guest: Steven Poole, Moderator: Chris Keulemans

Based on British journalist Steven Poole’s intriguing book of the same name, UNSPEAK is a brand-new interactive documentary by Submarine Channel that critically and satirically reveals the unspoken messages and obscured meanings behind familiar media terms such as War on Terror, Weapons of Mass Destruction, Climate Change, File Sharing, Austerity Measures, Erectile Dysfunction, or the Dutch word Kopvoddentax.

Through a radical collage of archive footage, quotes, and Steven Poole’s own enlightening analyses, Unspeak visualizes how language is manipulated to suit political agendas, smuggling persuasion into description.

Launching the end of June, the Unspeak website is designed by the award-winning studio Catalog Tree and features short documentaries, interactive data visualizations, and a participatory Unspeak dictionary that people can explore and contribute to.
