A MATTER OF WOMEN

In this day and age, gender equality between men and women coming into the 21st century continues to be a strong subject of debates in all spheres of public and private life. Controversies of noticeable differences in wages, labour opportunities in industry and presence on the scene of governments and administrations continue. It is not strange. In the past, any time academic preparation and practical training for women to take on responsibilities of importance has taken place, all over the world, their presence in numbers has fallen below those of men, who by their historical advantage and normal contexts - which are too orthodox and specific in the social displacements of all the sectors- persist in power with egoistic pedantry. It is no great mystery.

In the creative scope, nevertheless, it would seem that from the second half o f the twentieth century to the present, these divisions have been disappearing thanks to a mutual dialogue between both sexes. Like a life-line of language that recues, every time more forcefully, the femininity and masculinity of all creation; achieved independently by a man and a woman. Simply, because the language of art is a vehicle where these conditional limitations stop having weight to transform into a creative tool, and therefore, into a productive force. Thus, today, when you have asked for the names of reference for compendiums, women multiply with amazing speed and dynamism. Frida Kalho, Modotti Bathtub, Rebecca Horn, Sophie Calle, Annie Leivobitz, Elizabeth Peyton, Jenny Saville, among hundreds of other artists of first order are essential to understand this stage of the history of art, necessary to catalogue the artistic production of contemporary art of our time, and above all, in the development of conceptual art, video-art and performance art, in addition to the already traditional techniques of the field.

The tenth edition of the Festival of Contemporary Art of Barcelona, BAC!09, will be dedicated in its entirety towards the production developed in the latest periods by female artists from all over the world, a unique and referential opportunity to give international panorama to the visual arts created by them. To differentiate it from other instances of a similar theme, the majority of times diminished by feminism or the social critic towards difference and discrimination of the genders, BAC! will break away from stereotypes to present a fresh, dynamic and mobilising display of the connection of genders to the world of art, with humour, irony and divergence as main revitalising contributions, a good chance to enjoy sensitivity taken to its limits where only those who have the secret, that other understanding of the world crowned by roses, where fragility brushes with force, the maternity with life as well with death, a kiss with sensuality and the hands with matter. A new version, a noble version, a success. A new stage is born in art. It is very welcome. Yes, very welcome.
