We are currently conducting a search at UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO
Visual Arts Department for a new faculty position:  an artist/cultural
practitioner in computing.  We have extended the deadline one more week.
 
We seek an artist with a proven exhibition record whose work exhibits an
in-depth understanding of computing and its relationship to contemporary art
and its discourses. UCSD is a research university that actively promotes and
supports creative work and advanced research in computing within a broadly
interdisciplinary arts department that includes studio, media, and art
history, theory and criticism.
 
UCSD boasts significant resources for research in computer arts. With
the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts (CRCA)
(http://crca.ucsd.edu),  and the California Institute of Telecommunications
and Information Technology (Calit2) (http://calit2.net), this includes
state-of-the-art facilities for 4K Digital Cinema, a 32 wall virtual reality
CAVE, motion capture and 3d laser capture, CNC and rapid prototype
fabrication, multi-channel spatialized sound environments, the Experimental
Game Lab and media integrated performance environments. Opportunities for
developing research also include the San Diego Supercomputer Center and
various cross-campus collaborations. Current members of the permanent
computing arts faculty are Amy Alexander, Sheldon Brown, Jordan Crandall,
Ricardo Dominguez, Adriene Jenik, Lev Manovich, and Brett Stalbaum.
 
Teaching will include both graduate seminars and undergraduate courses,
including courses in an Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts Major with
the department of Music.
 
The rank is Assistant Professor, tenure-track to Associate Professor,
tenured, beginning July 1, 2008. Salary commensurate with qualifications and
experience and based upon UC pay scales.

Candidates must demonstrate in their work and teaching a substantial
engagement with the computing arts and their relationship to broader
discourses of contemporary art and culture. Candidate will actively
participate in the ongoing development of curriculum and facilities.
Teaching will draw upon knowledge of networked cross-platform environments.
Areas of expertise might include any of the following: locative media,
social media, network art, digital imaging; graphics or sound programming;
virtual environments; computer based installation; electronics and robotics;
history and theory of new media. MFA or equivalency and teaching experience
required.

statement summarizing teaching experience and leadership efforts and/or
