<nettime-ann> [news] [Art News] Robert Maciejuk - American Night

.

     Robert Maciejuk - American Night
      February 18 - April 23 2006

organization: Zacheta National Gallery of Art

location: pl. Malachowskiego 3 00-916 Warsaw (Poland)

      opening: February 17 / 2006, 6 p.m.

Born in 1965 and a graduate of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts,
Macie=
juk gained recognition as a painter of partially abstract works inspired
by=
games with perspective and elements of renaissance architecture. His
later=
works refer to the world of signs, symbols and logotypes. And just when
ev=
erybody thought they had his painting well classified, he surprised the
pub=
lic with a new series of works portraying characters from popular TV
series=
for children. Kitsch, over-sweet Teddy-bears in his paintings acquire
new =
rather scary features.

The title of the exhibition refers to the cinema effect used in
secon=
d half of 20th century which provided opportunity to realise night scenes
d=
uring the day light. But deep shadows and colour of the sky made cautious
v=
iewer aware of this technical trick. Robert Maciejuk made series of
paintin=
gs referring to the plans of popular animated films for children, which
wer=
e left by all the characters. Maciejuk changes all theirs elements:
trees, =
buildings etc in a manner similar to use of different lances like in the
"A=
merican night" technique. Those interferences lead to pointillist or even
a=
bstract paintings. It is a kind of American night in Polish painting.
